Protect PDF

Want to lock your PDF with a password? This free Protect PDF tool adds a password to your file. Only people who know the password can open it.

What does Protect PDF do?

It locks your PDF. When someone opens the file, they must type the password. You can also say if people may print the file, copy its words or edit it. This is good for papers that are private, like bills, contracts and ID copies.

How to use it

  1. Choose your PDF file, or drag it into the box.
  2. Type a password and type it again. Then choose what people may do (print, copy or edit).
  3. Press the "Protect PDF" button and download your locked file.

When can you use it?

  • You want to email a private paper.
  • You want to keep a file safe on a shared computer.
  • You want to stop people from printing or copying your file.

Good to know

We lock the file with AES-256, a strong kind of lock. Choose a strong password and remember it. If you forget it, we cannot get it back and we cannot reset it. Most PDF programs follow the rules like "no printing", but the password is what really keeps your file safe.

Is it private?

Yes. The work is done on your own device, so your file is not sent to our servers. Read our Privacy Policy to learn more.
